Project by the Numbers:

  • 12,100 tons of Hot Mix Asphalt
  • 2,750 SYS of Bridge Deck Overlay
  • 3,800 LFT of Storm Pipe

Two years ago, we started our work on the US 31 & SR 135/Thompson Rd Intersection Improvement and Bridge overlay in the Indianapolis area. This project intent was to increase efficiency and flow of traffic through US 31. The eastbound I-465 exit ramp to southbound US 31 was reconfigured from a free-flow ramp to a signalized intersection. Bridge deck overlays were completed on two I-465 entrance ramps. The intersection of US 31 and SR 135/Thompson RD was reconfigured from the existing signalized intersection into a displaced left turn intersection. The intersection also received an upgrade to pedestrian facilities such as added sidewalk and signaling. The curb was replaced throughout the project. The drainage was completely replaced with new storm structures, pipe, and detention basins. The project was completed with resurfacing of the entire contract.

A fun fact about this project: This project is that the left turn intersection is the first of its kind in Indiana! The displaced left turn configuration moves the left turns on US 31 that are in conflict, out of the intersection and synchronizes it with the signal cycle of the intersecting road. The turn lanes are synchronized with the main intersection, creating a continuous flow of traffic.

Check out the video below for a complete overview of the completed project!
