On October 29, the Milestone team joined Allen County officials, community members and media representatives at a ribbon cutting for the Bass Road Improvement Project in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Stretching 4.5 miles from Scott Road to Hillegas Road, this project transformed Bass Road from a two-lane county road with limited traffic into a major thoroughfare that provides connectivity to new housing and commercial developments in the area.

Construction began in spring of 2017 and recently concluded in fall of 2025. The project included new concrete pavement, a center left-turn lane, improved stormwater drainage, new curbs and gutters and 4.5 miles of multi-use trail that adds to the local pedestrian infrastructure. One of the three bridges on the project, which crosses Aboite Ditch, is the longest in Allen County.
The project also included four roundabouts, and one of the roundabouts is the first in Indiana to incorporate a rail line and fifth in the nation to do so. The Milestone team in Fort Wayne did an excellent job handling the complex logistics of the project and working with the unique design of the crossing while also accommodating frequent interruptions due to train schedules.

When it comes to a project like this, safety for both the traveling public and our team is the top priority. For that reason, Bass Road was closed for the duration of the project. Milestone appreciates local residents’ patience and partnership in keeping the road and the jobsite safe. Now that Bass Road is open to the public, the additional lanes and dedicated left-turn lane will make the roadway safer and allow traffic to flow more efficiently.
Milestone is incredibly proud of the team in Fort Wayne for their work on this project, and we’d also like to thank our subcontractors on this project: Fleming Excavating, Brooks Construction, Bertsch Franke and Slussers. The improvements to Bass Road have been in the works for nearly a decade, and we’re excited for the Fort Wayne community to enjoy the road and trail.
