National Safety Month is held every June to help reduce workplace injuries and deaths in the United States. In 1996, the National Safety Council designated June as National Safety Month. This year marks 27 years of safety awareness brought by thousands of companies worldwide. Safety is the number one pillar of the Milestone Way therefore it is integral campaign to our company. This year, Milestone will be focusing on 4 key areas of safety, spreading a weekly safety message including:

· Proper Lifting Techniques

· Trenching and Excavation

· The Importance of Hydration

· Stretch & Flex

While we talk about these subjects and know safety is first year-round, join us this month as we bring an elevated effort throughout our social media and communication platforms.

Proper Lifting Techniques

When physically lifting on a job site it is important to remember proper lifting techniques to avoid injury. When lifting, be sure to bend at the knees and keep your back straight. Hold the load close to your body and keep your feet shoulder-width apart for balance. Avoid twisting or turning while lifting and use your leg muscles rather than your back. If something is too heavy or awkward, get help! It’s better to ask for assistance than to risk injury.

Trenching and Excavation

Trenching and excavation can be dangerous if the right safety precautions are not taken. It is important to remember that the procedures OHSA has in place is to keep workers as safe as possible. The Importance of Hydration

Summer heat is upon us, which can cause up to 1.5 liters in sweat a day. It is important to replace bodily fluids lost during that sweat to prevent dehydration. OHSA recommends drinking water every 15-20 minutes to stay sufficiently hydrated and maintain a safe core body temperature. When you’re hydrated you can maintain mental clarity and muscle fatigue, helping to preventing less accidents! Hydration tip: Drink a glass of water every morning when you wake up, try adding hydration multipliers such as Liquid IV can help boost hydration as well!

Stretch and Flex

Stretching is an important part of the daily routine for construction workers, as it helps them to avoid injury, reduce pain and strain on muscles and joints, improve posture, increase flexibility and range of motion, boost circulation throughout the body, and maintain balance. Stretching before beginning a construction job can help improve concentration levels which will lead to better performance during the workday.
